SOUTH ATLANTIC RACE:
The crew being Dale, Ian and Dennis Cochrane. All three took atctive participation in the refit and therefore got to know the boat well technically.
The race started on the 4 Jan 2006. The wind was blowing upto 35knts, we got a tow out as we had elastic bands on our propeller which reduces drag in the water(Pic of boat being towed by another Farr 38, yacht "Freedom" in the harbour)
We got away nicely, the first three days we had very strong breeze, the second night we had two reefs in the main and a number 4 genoa up. On the third day, While Dennis was helming we had an accidental gybe which wrensched the Binnacle off its mountings. We were concerned that our steering would be shot, reducing us to emergency tiller which would not have bode well for the rest of the trip and therefore retitrement to Luderitz would then have become an option. Fortunately the pedastil was undamaged, therefore there were no problems with the steering. Pic of boat at the start sail number SA1105, also sailing out of Cape Town and sailing on the second day, note how wet the deck is...
